Our next Maker Monday is October 13th. Students are invited to come into the library all day to make Franken Toys! Teachers will vote on their favorites and the top three will win a $10 gift certificate to use at the Scholastic Book Fair October 20th - 24th.
If you'd like to donate some toys, just bring them to the library any time this week!

We had a very busy week! Monday, September 15th, was our FIRST Maker Monday. The students really seemed to enjoy the day and the Teen Advisory Board is now busy planning more upcoming events. Be sure to check out the Makerspace page to learn more!
WOLF TV made their FIRST broadcast. The crew worked so hard interviewing players, runners and coaches and putting together the final product. The newscast was shown during seminar on Friday so be sure to ask your child if they saw it. We also had a Box Tops competition between seminars to celebrate the upcoming movie release of The Maze Runner. One winner from each grade was chosen to win a $20 gift card to Marcus Crosswoods Theater. You were a winning seminar if you were "grieved" the least amount of times. Seminars with the most participation also received a Schneider's Bakery donut party!! Grievers could be purchased for 20 Box Tops or $2 or a combination of both. If you don't know what a Griever is.....read The Maze Runner! Or go see the movie :) Last week, over 860 library books were checked out to students. That is in addition to over 300 textbooks. Over 325 students visited the media center throughout the week. Finally, information literacy and research lessons were taught in the library during ten separate class periods! It was a BUSY WEEK!
Adult volunteers really are A LOT lot of help! They shelve books, check in books from the book drop, and check out books to students. This is very helpful when I'm working with individual students and classes. If you are an adult with an spare hour or two during the week who would like to be involved in your school community, please contact me. I can really use your help. We've had a FANTASTIC first week of school! The students were treated to assemblies and short lessons on expected behavior throughout the building. We had several big winners for the Summer Reading Challenge: two students each won $25 gift cards in a raffle and two students each won a 4GB flashdrive/bracelet (valued at $20) for reading ALL of the EIGHT selected books!
Applications are currently being accepted by students who wish to be a library helper, or a member of the Teen Advisory Board and WOLF TV ( both of which are new this year). Teen Advisory Board members will help with library programming, collection development, and Maker Mondays (part of our new Maker Space!). Any parent or community member interested in helping out in the library can contact me via email or phone. I'm ALWAYS in need of volunteers so don't be shy!!! I cannot believe how fast this school year has passed by and that summer break is only two weeks away! Wednesday was the last day for students to check out books from the school library and Friday was the last day to return books. However, as of today, there are STILL OVER 200 LIBRARY BOOKS CHECKED OUT.
Students have been reminded numerous times for the past two weeks (during morning announcements) that if library books were not returned by Friday, May 9th they may not be able to participate in the pool day celebration on the last day of school. Please ask your child if they have library books checked out and, if so, to return them on Monday! I had so much fun at Emerson's Family Read Night held on Wednesday, April 9th. The night included a book fair, crafts, activities, raffles, popcorn and COOKIES!! Two of our board members were in attendance as well as our district superintendent who came to read to the students!! For an extra touch, attendees got to be somebody else for the night in celebration of "Name Yourself Day". Lots of fun!!! Trade mag, Hollywood Reporter, asks if star Shailene Woodley is posed to become the next Jennifer Lawrence. People Magazine has a special issue (out now) devoted to the film; the March 7 issue of Entertainment Weekly Magazine features the film's stars on the cover; and The Official Illustrated Movie Companion has just been published by Harper Collins.
Last night was Walnut Springs' first National History Day Showcase. This year's theme was "Rights and Responsibilities". We had close to one hundred exhibits, papers, documentaries and websites representing four months of research.
It was great to talk to students about what they learned and amazing to see how proud they were of their hard work. Over 25 students were awarded with "Excellent" or "Superior" distinction and four students received a "Best In Show" recognition. Those students were:
Congratulations to all of the students for their commitment and effort to this project. |
